Thai TattooThe Authentic Thai Tradition
Looking for a Thai tattoo in the Netherlands? The real Thai tattoo is a Sak Yant — an ancient ritual with sacred symbols, placed by a trained Ajarn with a personal blessing. Not decoration. Protection.
What is a Thai Tattoo?
The term "thai tattoo" is used broadly for tattoos in a Thai style. But in Thailand itself, there is one tattoo tradition passed down for more than two thousand years: the Sak Yant.
"Sak" means to tattoo or to tap. "Yant" derives from the Sanskrit word "Yantra" — sacred geometric symbol. Together they describe a tattoo that is not purely decorative, but a carrier of spiritual power.
Sak Yant originates from Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar over two thousand years ago. Thai warriors wore the sacred patterns as protection in battle. In World War II, Allied forces nicknamed Thai soldiers with Sak Yant "Taharn Phee" — ghost soldiers — for their reputation as invincible.
The patterns are a fusion of Buddhist mantras written in Khom script, Hindu Yantra geometry and shamanistic spells. Every symbol, every line and every character carries a specific spiritual function. The Sak Yant is the authentic Thai tattoo — everything you are looking for when seeking a real Thai tattoo.

The Difference: Decorative vs. Ritual Thai Tattoo
In the Netherlands, there are studios that tattoo Thai-inspired motifs. The patterns look like Sak Yant — Khom script, geometric lines, animals and deities. But there is a fundamental difference that determines whether you get a decorative design or an authentic Thai tattoo.
A decorative Thai tattoo
A tattoo artist places a Thai pattern using a modern tattoo machine. The motif is Thai-inspired, but there is no ritual, no Ajarn and no blessing. The result is a beautiful tattoo — but it is not a Sak Yant.
An authentic Sak Yant — the real Thai tattoo
An Ajarn — a spiritual master trained for years in the Sak Yant tradition — places the tattoo using a traditional needle (khem sak) or bamboo/metal rod (mai sak). Each symbol is chosen based on your personality, intention and current moment in life. The session ends with a prayer and a spoken blessing that activates the power of the yant.
The yant without ritual and blessing is just an image. With the ritual, it becomes protection.

What Makes a Thai Tattoo Studio Authentic?
If you are looking for a Thai tattoo with genuine spiritual meaning, three things are non-negotiable:
1. A trained Ajarn — not just a tattoo artist
A true Ajarn has studied for years under a master in the Sak Yant tradition. He knows the meaning of every symbol, the Khom script and the mantras, and is qualified to perform the activating blessing. Not every Thai tattoo studio has an Ajarn.
2. The ritual — not a session, but a ceremony
An authentic Sak Yant begins with an orientation: what is your intention, what protection are you seeking, which yant suits you as a person right now. There is conscious attention — not a catalogue you pick from.
3. The blessing — the activation of the power
After placement, the Ajarn recites a prayer in Pali or Khmer. This is the heart of the Sak Yant and what distinguishes an authentic Thai tattoo from a purely decorative one: the power lies not only in the pattern, but in the intention that has been activated within it.
At Sakyan, our Ajarn Silas van Gemert incorporates all three elements. Every Thai tattoo placed at our studio is a personal, spiritual experience — certified and traditional.

Thai Tattoo FAQ
What is the difference between a Thai tattoo and a Sak Yant?
"Thai tattoo" is a broad term for tattoos in Thai style. A Sak Yant is the specific traditional sacred tattoo tradition from Thailand: sacred symbols in Khom script, placed by a trained Ajarn with a ritual blessing. Not every Thai tattoo is a Sak Yant — but every authentic Sak Yant is a true Thai tattoo.
How do I find an authentic Thai tattoo studio in the Netherlands?
Look for three things: does the studio have a certified Ajarn, is a ritual performed including a blessing, and do they use traditional technique (khem sak / mai sak)? At Sakyan we meet all three criteria.
Do I need to go to Thailand for a real Thai tattoo?
No. At Sakyan in Breda you work with a certified Ajarn trained in authentic Sak Yant traditions. You receive the same ritual experience, traditional technique and blessing as in Thailand — without the journey.
How much does a Thai tattoo / Sak Yant cost at Sakyan?
The cost depends on the chosen design, complexity and session duration. We do not use fixed price lists because every Sak Yant is personal. Schedule a free orientation consultation to discuss your wishes.
Is a traditional Thai tattoo more painful than a regular tattoo?
The traditional khem sak method is experienced by most clients as less painful than a modern tattoo machine. The sensation is rhythmic tapping rather than burning. Most people describe the session as meditative.
Can I choose which Thai tattoo I get?
You can share your wishes and preferences, but the Ajarn determines together with you which symbol best suits you at this point in your life. You do not pick from a catalogue — the yant chooses you.
Are there rules after getting a Thai tattoo / Sak Yant?
After a Sak Yant there are traditional behavioural guidelines (koh sam): respectful behaviour towards others, no speaking ill of parents, and conscious respect for the intention of the yant. You will receive personal aftercare instructions from our Ajarn.
Is a Sak Yant Thai tattoo suitable for women?
Absolutely. Many Sak Yant designs are specifically suited for women: the Unalome, certain Hah Taew variants and Naga yants are very popular. Our Ajarn will discuss which yant best matches your energy and intention, regardless of gender.
