Lotus with Eight Directions and Mantra Lines
A vertical design with an eight-rayed star at the top, a five-pointed looped star with red Khom letters, a red lotus and five mantra lines with spires.
✦Meaning & Background
From top to bottom: eight rays around a ring of small red heart-shaped petals, a row of five spires, a five-pointed star drawn in one continuous line with a red syllable in each loop, and a red lotus with the mantra lines running on beneath it. In the tradition the eight directions, known from the Paed Tidt, stand for protection on all sides, and the lotus for purity and growth.
✦More about this design
This design reads like a column, from crown to foot. At the top eight rays surround a ring of small red petals: the eight directions you know from the Paed Tidt. Where they fill a whole circle there, here they are gathered into a small star that sits like a crown above the rest. Below it follows a row of five spires. The heart of the column is a five-pointed star, drawn as one continuous line with rounded loops. In each loop and in the centre sits a red syllable, much as the Eight Directions with Syllable Grid sets its syllables in a grid. Then comes the red lotus, with mantra lines running on beneath it, as in the Lotus with Vertical Mantra. Two long lines frame the whole and three shorter ones continue below the flower, five in all. If you prefer the lotus large and without stars, have a look at the Red Lotus on Five Lines. Because of its long, narrow build, this design sits well along the spine or on the side of the ribs, with the star at the top. What is the looped star?
A five-pointed star, drawn as one continuous line with rounded points. It forms a frame for the red syllables, which sit in each loop and in the centre.
Where is this design usually placed?
Along the spine or on the side of the ribs, where the long, narrow shape can run from top to bottom.
