Sak Yant (สักยันต์) are sacred tattoos that originate from the oldest cultures of Southeast Asia. The word "Sak" means to tattoo in Thai, while "Yant" refers to the mystical geometric patterns – Yantras – from the Vedic and Hindu traditions. For over 2000 years, these tattoos have been applied as protective symbols.
The origin of Sak Yant
The tradition of Sak Yant dates back to the ancient Khmer Empire and early Buddhist civilizations in what is now Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. Warriors wore Sak Yant for protection in battle, and monks used the symbols to convey blessings. This knowledge was passed down orally from master to student, generation after generation.
The meaning of the symbols
Each Sak Yant pattern has a unique meaning. The famous Hah Taew (five lines) offers protection, luck and success. The Paed Tidt (eight directions) protects from all compass points. The powerful Tiger Yant symbolizes courage, strength and authority. Each design is tailored to the intention and life path of the bearer.
The role of the Ajarn master
An authentic Sak Yant is only applied by a certified master – an Ajarn – who has studied for years under the guidance of a monk or experienced master. The power of the tattoo lies not only in the symbol itself, but especially in the prayers, mantras and blessings that the master recites during the ceremony.

The Five Precepts of Sak Yant: Sila Ha
An authentic Sak Yant comes with five precepts, known as Sila Ha. These rules stem from Buddhist ethics and are given by the master after the ceremony. They help keep the power of the Yant alive:
1. Do not intentionally kill any living being. 2. Do not steal. 3. Do not lie or make false promises. 4. Do not use intoxicating substances. 5. Do not commit adultery.
Many Sak Yant bearers find that following the Sila Ha not only spiritually activates their tattoo, but also positively influences their daily life. These are principles of respect — for yourself, for others, and for the traditions that give your tattoo its power.
Sak Yant in Europe: Sakyan in Breda
For many people, a trip to Thailand for an authentic Sak Yant is not feasible. Fortunately, master Silas van Gemert has brought this ancient tradition to Europe. After years of study and initiation with recognised Ajarn masters in Chiang Mai, he performs authentic Sak Yant tattoos in his studio in Breda, the Netherlands.

How long does a Sak Yant session take?
A typical session takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the design and size. The preparation, conversation with the master and the closing blessing are all included in that time.
