Sak Yant Thailand: the origin of the sacred Thai tattoo

Discover the 2,000-year-old origin of Sak Yant in Thailand. Learn about Buddhist monks, Ajarns, Yantra symbols and the spiritual power behind the sacred Thai tattoo.

Sak Yant is one of the oldest forms of sacred tattoo art in the world. Its origins lie in the heart of Thailand, where Buddhist monks and spiritual masters have been applying Yantra symbols to the human body for over 2,000 years. What exactly is the origin of this sacred Thai tattoo? And why is Sak Yant so much more than an ordinary tattoo?

The ancient roots of the sacred Thai tattoo

The history of Sak Yant stretches back to the Khmer civilization in Cambodia and the early Thai kingdoms of Sukhothai and Ayutthaya. As Buddhism spread across Southeast Asia, these traditions merged with Pali mantras and Vedic Yantra symbols to form what we know today as Sak Yant.

Sak Yant literally means: Sak = to tattoo, Yant = sacred Yantra symbol. Every line, every mark and every dot is imbued with ancient Buddhist power.

Monks and Ajarns: guardians of the tradition

In Thailand, Sak Yant are applied by Buddhist monks (Bhikkhu) in temples such as Wat Bang Phra in Nakhon Pathom, or by secular spiritual masters known as Ajarns. An Ajarn knows the sacred Pali mantras by heart and applies the tattoo with the Khem Sak needle, accompanied by prayers and breathing.

The power of Yantra symbols in the sacred Thai tattoo

The symbols in a Sak Yant are not random drawings. They are Yantra: geometric sacred figures derived from Pali, the liturgical language of Theravada Buddhism, containing encoded protective powers.

Hah Taew — the five sacred lines, the most universal protective mark

Gao Yord — nine peaks, symbol of the nine sacred mountains of the Hindu universe

Paed Tidt — eight directions, protection from all points of the compass

Suea — the tiger, strength and dominance

Each design is tailored to the wearer. The Ajarn reads your energy and determines which protection you need. This makes Sak Yant fundamentally different from an ordinary Thai tattoo.

Thailand as a pilgrimage destination for Sak Yant

Every year, thousands travel to Thailand for an authentic Sak Yant. Wat Bang Phra in Nakhon Pathom is the largest Sak Yant temple in Thailand, where the famous annual Sak Yant Festival takes place and thousands reactivate their sacred Thai tattoo.

Chiang Mai is the spiritual north of Thailand, home to renowned Ajarns in the Lanna tradition. Bangkok offers both traditional temples and experienced Ajarns in private settings.

The spiritual rules of Sak Yant

Whoever wears a Sak Yant commits to the Katha — spiritual precepts: no stealing, no adultery, no lying, respecting others and no animal cruelty. Breaking these rules is believed to weaken or reverse the power of the Sak Yant.

Authentic Sak Yant in Europe

Not everyone can travel to Thailand for a sacred Thai tattoo. Sakyan Studio in Breda brings the ancient Thai tradition to the Netherlands. Master Silas was officially blessed by a senior Ajarn in Chiang Mai and brings the same spiritual intention you would find in a Thai temple.

Silas van Gemert (°1977, Vlissingen) left the Netherlands at 17 for Australia. His journey led him to Thailand, where he lived and worked for 15 years. He learned the Thai language and submitted to the discipline of Buddhist monks.

He received the sacred blessing that gives him the right to place Sak Yant tattoos. His spiritual journey also took him to Brazil, Hawaii and Jerusalem.

Today, Silas is the leading Sak Yant master of Europe, working from his studio in the centre of Breda.
