Hanuman

Hanuman with Spear and Dagger

A leaping Hanuman with a spear and pennant raised above his head and a dagger in his other hand. Khom letters are written on his arms, chest and legs.

✦Meaning & Background

Hanuman hangs in a wide leap, knees turned out, with a crown, jewellery and patterned bands around his arms and legs. The letters are not placed around him but on his body, an unalome spire rises on each side and a line of script closes the design at the bottom. In the tradition Hanuman, the monkey god of the Ramakien, stands for courage, loyalty and perseverance.

✦More about this design

The Hanuman with the victory banner shows the monkey god mid-leap with a flag and a sword, inside a ring of Khom script. This design carries the same weapons, a spear with a fluttering pennant and a dagger, but treats the script differently: the letters sit directly on his arms, chest, belly and legs, as if Hanuman himself were wearing a Sak Yant. With no mantra ring around him, the figure gets plenty of room. The open lines show the crown, the jewellery and the patterned bands on his arms and legs clearly. An unalome spire rises on each side, the sign for the path to enlightenment that you also know from the standalone Unalome, and a single line of script runs along the bottom. If you would rather see Hanuman at rest, you will find him in the seated Hanuman warrior. Because of the wide leap the figure fills the space from left to right, so the design works best on the upper back, the shoulder blade or the chest. ✦Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the Hanuman with the victory banner?

Both show Hanuman mid-leap with a flag and a blade. In the Hanuman with the victory banner the script forms a ring around him, here the letters are on his body and there is no ring.

Why are there letters on Hanuman himself?

That way figure and mantra become one: the script belongs to the monkey god's body instead of standing around it. It looks as if Hanuman himself is wearing a Sak Yant.

Where is this design usually placed?

On the upper back, the shoulder blade or the chest, where the wide leap and the spires on either side get enough room.
